Electronic Music History
Electronic music originated in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The Futurists, an Italian music group, made the genre grow more popularity, by when they started to have people value “noise,” which had not previously been referred to as music. From the 1920s to the 1930s, electronic instruments were created, with the first one being called the Etherophone, later renamed to the Theremin. After WWII, the Japanese started to learn about electronic music, and put in the most effort to make it popular, leading to their dominance in the music scene years later.
In the late 1960s synthesizers started to become available and bands like The Beach Boys and The Beatles started to use electronic instruments in their music to supplement and define their sound. Progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Genesis started to use synthesizers in their music as well.
Starting in the early 1990s, dance music (called Electronic Dance Music, also known as EDM) started to become popular by being played in nightclubs, and eventually the radio as well.
